Something cool about CS, something you can do with CS...
Or, is there a problem in the book you'd like to talk about?
Survey results will make available over the weekend, but the summary is... About 1/3 of the class is nice and happy, 1/3 unsure, and 1/3 unhappy.
Suggestions that seem to have wide support include: going over quiz questions at the beginning of class, continuing to type lots of examples in JES with students following along, trying to go along with the book more closely rather than adding material that makes life easier earlier than the book does it (or if I am doing something out of order in the book, make it clear and provide a pointer to where it is talked about in the book), going through some examples from the book in class too, save 5 minutes at the end of wednesday's class to explain the homework problems, relax the grading scale a bit, having a lab hour associated with this class (so making it 4 hours instead of 3), and having tutors available somewhere for 151. The last two, I can't do anything about for this semester.
Other suggestions seemed favored by some students and not by others, like: going faster versus going slower, more or less challenging homeworks.
Other ideas: have office hours on MW and homework due Friday. Also, remember all my babbling advice from rambling email messages...
Also, if you don't type fast enough, then copy and paste the code from the course website to follow along.
Note: sometimes I will do a function slightly differently than in the book to give you another example of how to do things, and that is a good thing...
Pick up where we left off last time - some more examples: negativeImage, grayImage (those two are on pages 66, 67 in the book - and my sample code does the same thing as in the book, just arranged slightly differently), and playing with those.
Introducing "range" as a way to do a for loop, and how we can use it just the same as getPixels. Example from the book is lighten on page 75.
For next time - more about for loops, mirroring pictures.
And make sure to take the quiz, and type things into JES to try them out!
