The earliest depiction that has been linked to the constellation of Orion is a prehistoric mammoth ivory carving found in a cave in the Ach valley in Germany in 1979.

Orion is bordered by Taurus to the northwest,Eridanus to the southwest,Lepus to the south, Monoceros to the east, and the Gemini to the northest. covering 594 square degrees.
